Twenty teams are competing in the English Premier League.  

The current holders of the English Premier League title are Man City.

LEAGUE FORMAT:  STANDARD

Teams receive 3 points/win, 1 point/draw and 0 pts/loss.  

Each team plays twice against the others resulting in a total of 38 matches for each team. 

At the end of the season, the 3 lowest teams are relegated to the Championship.

EUROPEAN QUALIFICATION

At the end of the season, the top four automatically qualify for the Champions League group stage.  A maximum of 5 teams are allowed per country to play in the Champions League

A place in the Champions League and Europa League is also gained by the winner of these competitions if they are not in the top four.  If this results in more than 5 teams qualifying, the 4th-placed team plays in the Europa League.

The 6th and 7th placed teams may qualify for the Europa League under certain conditions.  The winners of the FA and EFL cups qualify for the next season's Europa League.  If one of the cup winners has already gained a place in a UEFA tournament, the 6th placed team plays in the Europa League.   If both cup winners have already gained a place in a UEFA tournament, the 6th and 7th placed teams qualify for the Europa League.

PROMOTIONS AND RELEGATIONS

1.  Outgoing Teams

Last year's  relegated teams were Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United.

2.  Incoming Teams

The 3 teams promoted from the Championship League include:

1. Ipswich
2. Leicester
3. Southampton

For Ipswich, it is a return to the Premier League after 22 year's absence.  Leicester and Southampton are back in the Premier League following a 1 year absence.
